The following may assist users thinking about VoIP and help them to assess if it is what they need or want.
It also provides a little background information that may assist the understanding of how the F!Fon MT-F works with a F!B Fon Router Modem.

Fixed [Land] Line:
1. The Fixed Line Handset, as everyone knows, has a Telephone number assigned to it by the Telephone Service Provider.

2. A Handset is selected and in the F!B UI > Telephony > Telephony Devices > A selection has to be made regarding the Telephone Number that this specific Handset will use for Outgoing Calls. In this case it will be the Fixed Line Telephone Number.
This Number will always start with the STD Code of the location of the installation.

3. Further Handsets can be set up using the same Telephone Number.

4. The Fixed Line has to remain in order to provide the Internet Service.

VoIP or Broadband Internet Telephone:
I. The VoIP configured Handset also has a Telephone Number issued by the ISP or Provider of the Internet Telephone Service.
During the Contract Signing Up process the user is given the opportunity to select the STD Area Code as the starting point for assignment of the Internet Telephone Number, this can be from almost any STD Code Area in the UK.
When this is selected the remainder of the Number is taken from a block of Numbers held by the Provider.

II. A Handset is selected and in the F!B UI > Telephony > Telephony Devices > A selection has to be made regarding the Telephone Number that this specific Handset will use for Outgoing Calls. In this case it is the VoIP Internet Telephone Number.

III. Further Handsets can be set up using the same Telephone Number.

IV. No Line Rental is needed because VoIP uses the existing Telephone Line but transmits over the Internet Connection.

NB. DECT Telephones MUST be Registered via:

F!B UI > DECT > Cordless Telephones, prior to being configured in the above.

A. Fixed Line Contracts often include Inclusive Calls to some Non Geographic Numbers.
They are often have unrestricted Inclusive Minutes with limits placed on Call duration that if exceeded become chargeable.
There is no point in taking a Handset on your travels it will not be able to connect to a Telephone Service.

B. VoIP Contracts may not include Calls to Non Geographic Numbers.
They are often provide a set Number of Minutes Inclusive with any excess being chargeable.
The VoIP Handset can be taken with you anywhere, and subject to Internet access within the contract limits it will be able to communicate from the other side of the planet without incurring extra charges.

Consider the situation of using both Telephone Services in the same location, say your house or office.
This arrangement is not very convenient if there are differing conditions in the contracts covering the two Telephone Services.
If you pick up the ‘wrong’, in this case VoIP, Handset to make an 0845 Number Call it would be charged for.
